Individual acoustic preference in self-assembled sleep soundscapes

There is no universally optimal sleep soundscape.

Between-user variation in acoustic response was 7–9× the population-mean effect.

Field study of 77,408 users · Forum Acusticum 2026, Graz

To be presented at Forum Acusticum / Euronoise 2026 in Graz (September). The full study page and open-access paper appear here once the proceedings are out.

Who is behind this

Sonora is built and researched by one person — an acoustic scientist in Solothurn, Switzerland.

What we don't claim

  • We don't claim Sonora improves your sleep. The study is observational: it shows association, not cause. A within-user randomised study is planned, and until it exists, causal language stays off this site.
  • We don't claim there is a best sound for sleep. Our own data argue the opposite — responses differ 7–9× more between people than any average effect.
  • We don't decorate pages with the word "science". Where there is a checkable fact, we state the fact; where there isn't, we say so.
